Why are some pieces of jewelry worth more than others?
The gold commodity market price is based on 1 troy ounce of 24k or 99.99% pure refined gold. Jewelry is mixed with other alloys to make it stronger and sometimes change it’s color – it is not pure gold. Karat content in jewelry indicates what percentage of your piece is actually gold. For instance, 10k literally means that 10 parts out of 24 is gold, or 41.7% of the piece is gold. Likewise, 14k is 58.3% actual gold and 18k is 75% gold. The higher the karat – ie; 10k, 14k, 18k, etc. the higher the price you are paid because the gold content in the piece is higher.
